Add Extra Credit Points to Existing Grade Items
Step 1
Select Grades from the course Navbar.
Step 2
Verify that you are on the Manage Grades view.
Step 3
Locate the Grade Item you want to add Extra Credit points to. Select the Actions Menu icon, then choose Edit.
Step 4
Scroll down to the Grading area.
Step 5
Choose the Can Exceed option. This allows students to receive more points than the maximum number of points allocated to the Grade Item.
Note
If the Grade Item to which you are adding Extra Credit points belongs to a Category, and you would like the Category Subtotal to display as greater than 100%, you must edit the Category and select the option to Allow category grade to exceed category weight.

Select Save and Close.
Step 7
(Optional) If you would like the Final Calculated Grade to display as greater than 100%, change settings in the Final Calculated Grade Item to Can Exceed.
Create Bonus Grade Categories: Points Gradebook
Step 1
Select Grades from the course Navbar.
Step 2
Verify that you are on the Manage Grades view.
Step 3
Select New and choose Category.
Step 4
Enter the name of the Bonus Category.
Step 5
In the Grading area, select the box next to Can Exceed.
Step 6
In the Distribution section, choose how points are handled. The option to Distribute weight evenly across all items automatically distributes the points evenly across all items in the Bonus Category.

Select Save and Close.
Create Bonus Grade Items: Points Gradebook
Step 1
Select Grades from the course Navbar.
Step 2
Select New and choose Item.
Step 3
Select Numeric.
Step 4
Enter the name of the Bonus Grade Item.
Step 5
Determine the contingent action. If the Bonus Grade Item belongs to a Category, select the Category. If the Bonus Grade Item does not belong to a Category, make no changes to the default Category setting.
Step 6
In the Grading area, enter the Maximum Points value.
Step 7
Scroll to the Bonus item checkbox and select Bonus.
Step 8
Select Save and Close.
Step 9
Return to Manage Grades. The Bonus Grade Item displays the Bonus icon (star).
Step 10
(Optional) If you would like the Final Calculated Grade to display as greater than 100%, change settings in the Final Calculated Grade Item to Can Exceed.
Create Bonus Grade Categories: Weighted Gradebook
Step 1
Select Grades from the course Navbar.
Step 2
Verify that you are on the Manage Grades view.
Step 3
Select New and choose Category.
Step 4
Enter the name of the Bonus Category.
Step 5
In the Grading area, enter a Weight for the Bonus Category. To determine an appropriate weight, think in terms of letter grades on a 100-point scale.

Select the option, Allow category grade to exceed category weight.
Step 7
In the Distribution section, select Distribute weight evenly across all items.
Note
Adding weight to a Bonus Grade Category will cause the Gradebook to total more than 100%. It is safe to ignore the warning message that will display.
Note
There may be cases when the Category should not be set to Allow the category to exceed category weight, e.g., nesting Bonus Grade Items in a Category when the goal of the Bonus points are intended to boost (but not go beyond) the designated Category weight.

Select Save and Close.

Step 1
Select Grades from the course Navbar.
Step 2
Verify that you are on the Manage Grades view.
Step 3
Select New and choose Item.
Step 4
Select Numeric.
Step 5
Enter the name of the Bonus Grade Item.
Step 6
Determine the contingent action:
- If the Bonus Grade Item belongs to a Category, select the Category.
- If the Bonus Grade Item does not belong to a Category, make no changes to the default Category setting.
Step 7
Enter the Maximum Points of the Bonus Grade Item.
Step 8
Scroll to the Bonus item checkbox and select Bonus.
Step 9
Determine contingent action:
- If the Bonus Grade Item belongs to a Bonus Grade Category, scroll up and change the Weight of the Bonus Grade Item to 100%.
- If the Bonus Grade Item belongs to a Category with Bonus and Non-Bonus Grade Items, scroll up and enter the Weight of the Bonus Grade Item.
- If the Bonus Grade Item does not belong to a Category, scroll up and enter the Weight of the Bonus Grade Item.
Step 10
Select Save and Close.
Step 11
Return to Manage Grades. The Bonus Grade Item displays the Bonus icon (star).
Step 12
(Optional) If you would like the Final Calculated Grade to display as greater than 100%, change settings in the Final Calculated Grade Item to Can Exceed.
