Add H5P Activities to a D2L Course

The different activities or content types can generate scores in different ways. Depending on which activity is selected, instructors may have the option of viewing an H5P Drill-down Report and creating a grade item in the D2L course gradebook. To learn more visit H5P's support page on Scoring overview per content type (opens in new tab).

Note

Before starting, please confirm that the selected H5P activity has been set to send a score to the D2L course gradebook. This option is found in the activity's LTI Settings tab of the H5P Editor.

Graded - Existing Activities

Depending on which activity or content type is selected, this option should immediately create a grade item in the course gradebook. An H5P Drill-down Report will be created after the first student submits a score.

Step 1

Using a web browser, go to UArizona’s D2L Homepage (opens in a new tab) and log in with your UArizona NetID and password, then select the course you wish to work on.

Step 2

Select an existing module or create a new module in Content.

Step 3

Select the Existing Activities button.

Step 4

Select H5P from the list of drop-down options.

Step 5

An Add Activity window will appear. Select an existing activity you want to use by selecting the Insert button.

The resulting action will create a new topic with the embedded activity, and a grade item should also be immediately created in the gradebook.

Note

If you get an error stating, "An error occurred. Please contact your Brightspace administrator." it is likely because you do not have the Instructor role in the D2L course. You need a role that allows you access to the course gradebook as the action of inserting an H5P activity also creates a grade book item.

Graded - Insert Stuff

Depending on which activity or content type is selected, this option should create a grade item after the first student submits a score, along with an H5P Drill-down Report.

Note

An activity added with Insert Stuff will appear in the gradebook labeled under the activity title regardless of what may have been entered in the corresponding topic's title field. Consider editing the topic and grade item titles so both titles match and clearly indicate the specific activity or assignment name.

Step 1

Using a web browser, go to UArizona’s D2L Homepage (opens in a new tab) and log in with your UArizona NetID and password, then select the course you wish to work on.

Step 2

Select an existing module or create a new module in Content.

Step 3

Select the Upload/Create button.

Step 4

Select Create a File from the list of drop-down options.

Step 5

An HTML Editor will appear. Select the Insert Stuff button.

Step 8

Select the Insert button to insert the activity into the HTML page.

Note

If you get an error stating, "An error occurred. Please contact your Brightspace administrator." it is likely because you do not have the Instructor role in the D2L course. You need a role that allows you access to the course gradebook as the action of inserting an H5P activity also creates a grade book item.

Step 9

Select the Save and close button to save the activity within the HTML page.

The resulting action will create a new topic with the embedded activity. A grade item will not appear in the course gradebook until after the first student submits a score.

Important

The resulting grade item created with the Insert Stuff steps will automatically be set at 100 points. Consider adjusting to your preferred number of points that are appropriate for the assignment.

Consider using the following steps to add an ungraded activity to a course instead of adjusting the LTI setting of an individual activity to 'Do not send score’. Keeping the LTI setting at ‘Best Attempt’ on all of your activities will help to avoid possible future issues.

Step 1

Go directly to UArizona’s H5P site (opens in a new tab) and log in with your UArizona NetID and password.

Step 2

Select the pencil icon Edit Content of the activity that you wish to use.

  • Optional: Uncheck Allow search engines to index your public content if you do not want this activity using an internet browser search.
