Add H5P Activities to a Brightspace Course
On This Page:
Please Be Aware
Throughout this help page you will notice these green callouts for New Content Experience Instructions. This is a new user interface for the Content section within a Brightspace course. Between now and August 2026 there may be courses that have the current "Classic" content interface or some that are trying out the New Content Experience (NCE). Instructions may be different depending on what user interface your course is using. If your course is not using NCE you can ignore these callouts.
To learn more about NCE, visit the New Content Experience Introduction page. In August 2026, ALL Brightspace courses will be forced into the New Content Experience interface.
Note
Before starting, note that not all H5P activities are graded. If you would like a graded H5P activity to sync with the Brightspace gradebook, please confirm that the selected H5P activity has been set to send a score. This option is found in the activity's LTI Settings tab at the bottom of the H5P Editor. To send a score, First, Last, or Best attempt must be selected.

Graded - Add Existing
Depending on which activity or content type is selected, as long as the LTI Setting is set to send a score, this option should immediately create a grade item in the course gradebook. An H5P Drill-down Report will be created after the first student submits a score.
Step 1
Using a web browser, go to UA’s Brightspace Homepage (opens in a new tab) and log in with your UA NetID and password, then select the course you wish to work on.
Step 2
Select an existing module or create a new module in Content.
Step 3
Select the Existing Activities button.

Select the Add Existing button.
Step 4
Select H5P from the list of drop-down options.
New Content Experience Instructions
Select More from the list of drop-down options, then select H5P from the Third Party options.
Step 5
An Add Activity window will appear. Select the Insert button to the right of an already existing activity.

The resulting action will create a new topic in Brightspace with the embedded activity, and a grade item will also be immediately created in the gradebook if it has been set to send scores.
Note
If you get an error stating, "An error occurred. Please contact your Brightspace administrator," it is likely because you do not have the Instructor role in the Brightspace course. You need a role that allows you access to the course gradebook in order to insert an H5P activity that creates a gradebook item.
Graded - Insert Stuff
Depending on which activity or content type is selected, as long as the LTI Setting is set to send a score, this option should create a grade item after the first student submits a score, along with an H5P Drill-down Report.
Note
An activity added with Insert Stuff will appear in the gradebook labeled under the activity title regardless of what may have been entered in the corresponding topic's title field. Consider editing the topic and grade item titles so both titles match and clearly indicate the specific activity or assignment name.
Step 1
Using a web browser, go to UA’s Brightspace Homepage (opens in a new tab) and log in with your UA NetID and password, then select the course you wish to work on.
Step 2
Select an existing module or create a new module in Content.
Step 3
Select the Upload/Create button.

Select the Page option from the list.
Step 5
An HTML Editor will appear. Select the Insert Stuff button.

Step 6
Select H5P from the list of drop-down options in the Insert Stuff window.
Step 7
An Add Activity Window will appear. Select the activity you want to use by selecting the Insert button.

Step 8
Select the Insert button to insert the activity into the HTML page.
Note
If you get an error stating, "An error occurred. Please contact your Brightspace administrator," it is likely because you do not have the Instructor role in the Brightspace course. You need a role that allows you access to the course gradebook in order to insert an H5P activity that creates a gradebook item.
Step 9
Select the Save and close button to save the activity within the HTML page.
The resulting action will create a new topic with the embedded activity. A grade item will not appear in the course gradebook until after the first student submits a score.
Important
The resulting grade item created with the Insert Stuff steps will automatically be set at 100 points. Consider adjusting to your preferred number of points that are appropriate for the assignment.
Ungraded - Embed Code or External Link
Consider using the following steps to add an ungraded activity to a course instead of adjusting the LTI setting of an individual activity to 'Do not send score’. This choice allows you to keep the LTI setting at ‘Best Attempt’ on all of your activities and avoid possible future issues in course copies.
Step 1
Go directly to UA’s H5P site (opens in a new tab) and log in with your UA NetID and password.
Step 2
Select the pencil icon Edit Content of the activity that you wish to use.

Step 3
Scroll down to the end and select Publish.

Step 4
Select the Public tab for this activity to see the following options:
- Select the Embed Code tab or External Link tab and copy the resulting link or embed code
- Select the Content availability tab and select Domain allowlist OFF in the drop-down list of options
- Optional: Uncheck Allow search engines to index your public content if you do not want people to find this activity using an internet browser search.
Step 5
Select Save.
Step 6
You can now return to your Brightspace course and insert the external link or embed code using the steps indicated on the following page:
Add Video or Audio from the Web (opens in new tab)
New Content Experience Instructions
[The Audio/Video tab available in Classic Content is not available in the NCE]
Step 6
You can now return to your Brightspace course, and choose one of the three following options:
Use Page > Insert Stuff > Enter Embed Code or Page > Quicklink > Link > Open in Current Window if you want the activity to be embedded right into the Brightspace page.
Use Page > Quicklink > Link > Open in New Window or Create New > Weblink if you want the activity to open onto its own new page.
