Automatically Award Credly Badges in D2L Brightspace
The University of Arizona’s integration between D2L Brightspace and Credly makes it easy for instructors to recognize student achievement. With this feature, digital badges can be automatically awarded when students complete specific course activities—such as assignments, quizzes, or final grades.
Why Use Automatic Badge Awarding?
- Streamline recognition: Badges are awarded automatically—no manual tracking or issuing required.
- Motivate learners: Students receive immediate, verified recognition for their progress.
- Enhance transparency: Badges are tied to specific learning outcomes and stored in students’ Credly profiles.
- Support lifelong learning: Students can showcase their achievements beyond the classroom.
How It Works
Submit a Badge Proposal
Work with the Office of the Registrar’s Alternative Credentials Coordinator to propose a new micro-credential and badge: Micro-Credentials & Digital Badges website (opens in new tab).
- Badge Trigger Setup in Brightspace
- After your customized badge is approved, the Alternative Credentials Coordinator will:
- Confirm the course details and trigger conditions (e.g., assignment completion, quiz score, final grade).
- Coordinate with UCATT to configure the badge trigger in Brightspace.
- Ensure completion tracking is enabled and all necessary data is entered.
- After your customized badge is approved, the Alternative Credentials Coordinator will:
Instructors do not need to configure anything themselves. The setup is fully managed for you.
- Badge Issuance and Notification
- Once the student meets the trigger condition, the badge is automatically awarded via Credly.
- Students receive an email notification and can claim the badge in their Credly account.
- Reuse in Future Courses
Badge settings can be copied into future course sites by first using the CSR tool to request a new course and then using Brightspace’s Import/Export/Copy Components. Getting Started (opens in new tab).
