Using Media Library


What is the Media Library?

The Media Library is a tool that enables users to store, stream and create audio and visual materials in one place. These are referred to as Assets. Anything created or stored in the Media Library can easily be added to any Brightspace Course. 

Note

Video Notes are automatically saved to a user's media library.

Access Media Library

Step 1

Select Admin Tools icon (settings gear) next to your Brightspace Profile icon.

Step 2

Select All tab to view options available and select Media Library

Note

If you want to pin your Media Library so it appears under Pinned, select the pin icon next to Media Library. 

Organize Media Library

Step 1

From the Media Library, find all media files you've uploaded to or created in Brightspace. Use Sort to arrange the list by title or date and use Filter to narrow your Media Library to asset type, date modified or date created. 

Note

Select Clear All to remove any filters you've used to return the library to all assets. 

Step 2

Select Create Folder to make a folder to store items in your Media Library. Insert a name for the folder and select Save. Your folder appears with a folder icon and you can now move assets to the folder to better organize your media library.

Step 3

Use the search bar to locate files based on name; use the magnifying glass icon to perform a search after entering the search terms.

Step 4

To edit in bulk, select the checkboxes for the desired items and then Bulk Actions to Delete or Move To another folder. 

Step 5

Select the Recycle Bin icon to see any items deleted from the Media Library within the past ninety days. To restore an item, select the checkbox of the item and then select Restore Selected. Use Back at the upper left to navigate back to the Media Library. 

Adding Assets to Media Library

Step 1

Select Add Assets.

Step 2

Select either Record Audio or Record Video or drop files such as MP4, images, gifs into the drop field or select click to browse your device. 

Step 3

Allow browser webcam permissions if prompted and, when ready to record, select New Recording to begin recording your video.

Step 4

When done, select Stop Recording.

Step 5 

Select Next.

Step 6

Insert a title for your recording, enter a description, select the audio language in the dropdown and then select the checkbox for Automatically generate captions from audio.

Note

Auto-generated captions may contain errors. It is advisable to verify the captions and, if errors are present, Edit Captions on a Video Note (opens in new tab).

Step 7

View the preview and, when satisfied, select Finish

Note

File processing is not instantaneous. It is ok to select Insert while the notice of video processing appears

Edit Captions on a Video Note

Step 1

From the Media Library, locate the desired video and select the ellipses icon.  

Step 2

Select Edit

Step 3

Step 4

Select Closed Captions tab.

Step 5

Choose from the following options to edit existing captions:

  • Modify existing captions by selecting the text inside a text block and editing as desired.
  • Add new captions by entering desired text in the bottom box and selecting the Plus icon on the left or hitting enter on your keyboard.
  • Delete captions by using the Trash Can icon on the text block.
  • Adjust timing by choosing the corresponding arrow inside the desired text block and changing the start or stop times.
  • Select Upload to use a text file of your captions; you can further edit those once uploaded. 

Step 6

Select Finish in the upper right when done to save your edits. You can also Save Draft as you work.

Step 7 (optional)

Select Auto-Generate > Auto-Generate to enable auto-generated captions on your video. During the enabling process, editing is disabled. You can wait on the page or return later to edit.

Important

When you edit a video in the media library, it will update all instances of that video across Brightspace.

Important

Editing a Video Note updates all shared instances of the video across Brightspace.

Trim a Video Note

Step 1

From the Media Library, locate the desired video and select the ellipses icon.  

Step 2

Select Edit

Step 3

Determine the timestamps of the material you desire to cut.

Step 4

Select the Mark icon, which appears as a vertical line. 

Step 5

Place a mark at the time(s) that 

Step 6

Select the Cut icon and then select the part(s) of the video you want to trim; cut segments turn red. 

Step 7

Select Save Draft to save your progress as you work and when you are finished. 

Note

Saved drafts appear in the dropdown menu listed by date timestamp and whether the file is draft or published. 

Step 8

When you have completed your trims, select Finish

Step 9

Select Finish on the warning notice that you are about to update all instances of the Video Note across Brightspace. 

Step 10

The editing happens in the background and the video processes. You can navigate away from the page while this happens. Return to the Video Library at a later time. 

Important

Once Finish is selected, all instances of the Video Note update across Brightspace; the date and timestamp dropdown contains a list of all versions of the video note; selecting a previous version, including the original unedited version and then selecting Save Draft and then selecting Finish and confirming Finish reverts all instances of the Video Note to the original unedited version.
