Syllabus Guidelines for Top Hat

The information below is designed to be a guideline that instructors can copy and modify to meet their courses' needs. While this does not cover every Top Hat use case, it will give instructors a foundation to build upon. We recommend including this information in an announcement or within the description of the first Top Hat assignment in the course, rather than placing it directly in your syllabus.

Template for Instructors using Top Hat

We will be using Top Hat (www.tophat.com) for class participation. You will be able to submit answers to in-class questions using Apple or Android devices, computers, or through text message. For instructions on how to download the Top Hat app, refer to Top Hat’s Getting Started Guide (opens in new tab). Please note, you cannot create an account through the mobile application. 

If you already have a Top Hat account, navigate to your course via the learning management system (e.g. D2L) and select UA Tools in the course Navbar, then select Top Hat. If your course does not have a UA Tools menu in the Navbar, reach out to your instructor for where to find the Top Hat link. If you are new to Top Hat, you will be prompted to create an account once you select the Top Hat link.

If you do not select the Top Hat link, you will be removed from the course roster every night when the roster sync happens. In this case, you'll need to access the Top Hat link in your course as described above. If you completed any assignments using a Top Hat account with the same email address as the email address you use to log into D2L (or LMS), then your answers and grades will be restored.
