What Happens to PlayPosit Bulbs When an Owner Leaves?

When an instructor who created PlayPosit content (bulbs) retires or leaves the university, it’s important to take steps to ensure continued access and long-term usability of that content.
What Happens to PlayPosit Bulbs When an Owner Leaves?
PlayPosit bulbs will continue to work in active/live courses even after the original creator leaves. However, if the instructor’s NetID becomes inactive and ownership is not transferred, the bulbs may become difficult to locate, manage, or reuse in future courses. Additionally, access to edit or update the content may be limited.
Recommended Best Practice: Transfer Ownership
To avoid issues, instructors should transfer ownership of their PlayPosit bulbs (opens in new tab) before leaving.
Who should become the new owner?
- A member of your program or support team (recommended)
- Someone expected to remain at the institution long-term
- Someone who can manage and maintain the content over time
Note
What happens after ownership is transferred?
The new owner has full control over the bulbs. They can edit and update content and add or remove collaborators. The previous owner will no longer see the bulbs in their account once removed.
What If Ownership Is Not Transferred?
Administrators may still be able to access and reassign ownership, as long as the content hasn’t been deleted. However, this process can take additional time and coordination. Transferring ownership in advance is strongly recommended to avoid disruptions.
Understanding Co-Editors
You may see multiple people listed as co-editors on a PlayPosit bulb.
Why does this happen?
Any user with an Instructor role in Brightspace who accesses a bulb in a course is automatically added as a co-editor.
Can co-editors be removed?
Yes. Removing co-editors does not affect the content. It only removes that user’s access. It’s safe to keep only the people who need ongoing access (for example, your team and current instructors).
