Insert Panopto Video into a D2L Course

There are several ways you can insert a Panopto video into a D2L course. It is important to insert it properly so there are no issues with access for the viewer. Using our recommended method will avoid any kind of access issues without having to adjust several settings on the video.

Using the Insert Stuff Panopto method will automatically grant viewer access no matter what share permission is set for the video. This means the student won't be required to sign in or authenticate to Panopto prior to viewing the video. Having to sign in to view the video is often a pain point for students so this method helps eliminate that pain point.

Note

This method of insertion has no connection to the course gradebook, even if the Panopto video has a quiz embedded.

With this method you can insert a Panopto video anywhere you have access to the HTML editor (Announcements, Content File, Discussion Post, Quiz Question). These instructions will demonstrate how to insert a Panopto video in a Content File within a Content Module.

Step 1

Within a web browser, navigate and sign in to the D2L Homepage (opens in a new tab).

Step 2

Access your D2L course.

Step 3

Select Content within the course Navbar, then select the content module where you want the video inserted. The example in the screenshot below shows a module named Panopto where we will insert the video.

Step 4

Use Embed Code

If you plan to use this method to insert your video into your D2L course we recommend you set your video share permissions to be Public (Unlisted) Anyone who has the link. The reason for this is so that it won't require any sign or authentication to view the video. If you set the share permission to be something more restrictive you will most certainly receive emails from Panopto about students requesting access to view your video. The reason you will get those emails is because students who aren't signed in or authenticated to Panopto prior to attempting to access your video receive a message that they have to request access to view your video. They select a link on the video that says Request Access and that then sends the email to you. To avoid that, and believe us, you want to avoid those emails (especially with a large class) set the video share permission to public unlisted.

Note

This method of insertion has no connection to the course gradebook, even if the Panopto video has a quiz embedded.

Step 1

Within a content module, select the Upload/Create button and choose Video or Audio.

Step 2

Paste the embed code in the Enter Url or Embed Code box from the Panopto video you want to insert. Learn how to find the embed code at How to Embed a Video into a Webpage (opens in a new tab).

Step 3

Enter a Title for your video.

Step 4

Select Save.

Note

You can also use the embed code via the Insert Stuff tool by selecting Enter Embed Code. Again, we still recommend you adjust video share permissions to Public (Unlisted) Anyone who has the link if using the embed code.

Use Existing Activities for Panopto Quiz Graded Activity

This method requires a quiz to be included within the Panopto video. Visit Add a Quiz to a Panopto Video to learn how to add a quiz. If you have a Panopto video that includes a quiz, you can follow the steps below to insert it into a D2L course content module and have the quiz scores export to the course gradebook.

Important

  • Each question within a quiz will be worth 1 point. There is no ability to change how much a question is worth.
  • If you have multiple quizzes in a video, Panopto will report a total combined score of all quizzes to the D2L course gradebook.
  • Viewers must complete ALL quizzes within the video for a score to be submitted to the D2L course gradebook.

Step 1

First within Panopto, you must prepare a Panopto video with a quiz if you haven't already. You can follow instructions at Add a Quiz to a Panopto Video to do this.

Step 2

Within D2L, navigate to your course and select Content from the course Navbar.

Step 3

If a content module has not been created yet for the course, then create one. Learn how at the Create Modules section of the Create Your Course Structure help page.

Step 4

Select the content module where you want the video to reside.

Step 5

Select Existing Activities, then select Panopto Quiz in the dropdown menu options.

Step 6

The default Panopto folder it shows videos for is the course you are in. If your video is located in a different folder you may need to select the dropdown option and choose a different folder. Choose the Panopto video you would like to embed by selecting the radio button to the left of the video.

Step 7

Select the Insert button.

Step 8

This will add the quiz to the content module as a new External Learning Tool. Now you will need to connect it to your course gradebook. Select the video title to open and view it.

Step 9

From this page, if desired you can select the video title to edit it.

Step 10

To sync the quiz grades to the course D2L gradebook, in the Assessment section of the Activity Details, select Add a grade item or select a current one if it is already created.

  • If no gradebook item is selected, one will be automatically created once a student submits a quiz. By default, the quiz will be scored out of 100 points.
  • If a gradebook item is selected, the quiz grades will be synced with the selected gradebook item. This may take a moment to update after submitting a quiz.

Step 11

Select Save to save the grade item connection.

Step 12
