Assign Top Hat Content

Allowing your students to access your content outside of the class is achieved through assigning it. To learn more about assigning content for asynchronous use, please read the information below.

Getting Started

In the content tree, choose the item(s) or folder(s) that you would like to assign, then select the Assign button above the preview pane.

Assign button

The first choice available for you is whether to assign your content to your students as homework, or review. Content that has been assigned to your students as homework will be graded. Content that is assigned for review is not graded.

Assign menu

Choose Assignees

Content can be assigned to all students in the course, or individual students. By default, it will be assigned to all students, but choosing All students will allow you to choose Select students, which will prompt you to identify which students you would like to assign the content to.

Start & Due Dates

Start Date

When assigning content, you can set the window of time students have access to the materials. If you don't choose a future date to open the assigned content, the assignment will start when you click the Assign button. If you apply a due date, you'll be provided with choices for what happens after the due date.

Due Date

If desired, you can choose a due date for assigned content. If you set a due date, you will be provided with the additional option of After due date. If you have selected to assign the content as homework, you can choose what level of access you would like your students to have once the due date passes.

  • Students can Review allows the students the same review access as outlined previously.
  • Hide from students (Unassign) will prevent your students from having access to it.

Question Settings

When assigning content, there are a number of options you can choose to enable.

  • Number of Attempts Allowed: By default, students have an unlimited number of attempts when answering a question. If you'd like to limit the number of attempts your students have to answer the questions, you can choose a number of attempts, ranging from 1-5. The number chosen will become the new default, until modified.
  • Provide Feedback: Enabling this option will provide students with feedback as to whether or not they answered the questions correctly. If the Provide Feedback option is not enabled, students will have no insights as to whether they answered correctly or not.
    • Show Correct Answer After Last Attempt (available if Provide Feedback is enabled): This setting provides students with a Show Correct Answer button after their last incorrect attempt, or the last allowed attempt. If unlimited attempts have been selected, the button will appear after a learner's first incorrect attempt.

Note

Any limit applied to the number of attempts per question will also take into account any synchronous attempts made previously.

Modify Assignments

Assignments can be modified after they are assigned by selecting the item in the Content Tree, then choosing the Edit button. This allows you to alter the assignment settings, including: extending the due date, adding a due date, or modifying who the page has been assigned to.

To cancel or unassign content, select it in the list of your course content, then choose the Unassign button.
