Top Hat Guest Access

Top Hat Guest Access courses are most frequently used when faculty or staff are presenting to their colleagues using Top Hat and do not want them to have to create student accounts. Instead of utilizing a Top Hat learner account, users can participate without signing in.

Request Guest Access

Note

Top Hat Guest Access anonymizes all participant responses. Data from responses can be viewed for the session, but identifying which learners participated, or which learner gave a specific response is not possible.

Step 1

In order to allow guest access to a course you will need to email your support@tophat.com, providing them with the course's 6-digit join code, and requesting that Guest Access be enabled.

Step 2

Once enabled, your participants can access your course using a computer or mobile device. Regardless of the device they use, you will need to provide them with the course's unique URL. From within the Top Hat course, the URL can be copied from your browser's address bar. The URL should look like this example: https://app.tophat.com/e/000000. The last 6 characters will match the Join Code for the course.

Note

  • All users can participate in presented (synchronous) content, but mobile users cannot complete assigned (asynchronous) content from a mobile device.
  • We recommend that, before the session, presenters provide the course URL to participants.
  • Third-party tools can be used to create a QR code for your course URL. If you'd like, you can add the QR code to your first slide, allowing participants to scan the code to join.

Guest Access from a Laptop

Laptop users simply need to click on the course URL link or enter it into a browser's URL bar. They will be taken to a page that will ask them to Log in with school account, or to Enter as a Guest. Participants must Enter as a Guest.

Guest Access from a Mobile Device

To get started, mobile users simply need to copy and paste or type the URL into a mobile browser's URL bar. They will be taken to a page that will ask them to Log in with school account, or to Enter as a Guest. Participants must Enter as a Guest.

Note

Mobile users must access the course using a web browser and cannot participate using the Top Hat - Better Learning mobile app.

Troubleshooting

Should a participant receive an error message stating "You don't have permission to access this course", it's likely because they are logged in with an existing Top Hat account. Participants need to log out of their account first, and then proceed with the above instructions. Should the error persist, it is recommended that they proceed using a private or incognito browser.
