Understand Your Top Hat Course Layout

Upon entry to your course, you will be brought to the Content section. Below is an example of the layout of a Top Hat course when viewed from the Content section, including descriptions of each component area.

A: Course identifiers

This includes your course title and unique 6-digit join code. If your students are searching for your course on Top Hat without an invitation, they will need this information to locate it.


B: Course header

From your course header, you can access the Content section of your course as well as the Student Manager and Gradebook.


C: Create button

Select the Create button to reveal the Create menu, from which you can select from a variety of content you can build or upload into your course including questions, slides, files, Pages and Tests.


D: Content tree

Any content that you build, upload or import into your course will be listed in the content tree. Items within the content tree can be relocated by dragging and dropping them into the desired place. Content can also be organized in folders.


E: Course Settings, Add Professors, Course tips button

Use these icons to access your Course Settings, add a co-instructor or TA, and course tips for additional help and resources.


F: Preview pane

Items selected in the content tree will be visible in the preview pane. The image above shows a preview of a textbook chapter selected in the content tree. How items are displayed in the preview pane will vary depending on the nature of the item.


G: Account Settings, Help

Click on your name in the top right to drop down a menu to select your Account Settings. The help button will help you easily reach out to our support team or success centre.
